Online Science Labs
Instructional Design: North American Network of Science Labs Online
http://www.wiche.edu/nanslo/lab-activities These page samples are from the NANSLO Survey of Chemistry and Survey of Biology lab manuals I designed to support students and instructors using the NANSLO remote labs. The manuals set the stage for each of the 12 labs by previewing the purposes and procedures of each lab along with detailed instructions and labeled steps that use close-ups of the equipment and control panels. The manuals also guide students to use the recording and collaborative features while conducting the labs, guidance for analyzing and discussing results, and application of the labs in real-world contexts. |
Sustainability Education
Instructional Design: Andrews GREEN House
This website is designed as a learning platform to connect the Andrews Forest GREEN house project to students in any location. Lessons link to real-time data streaming from the GREEN house for students to use in activities and make comparisons to learner's site. Web cams and climate data is used in lessons to make ecosystem and climate comparisons. This project required using complex science data and information to create educational content and engaging interactive lessons for teachers and students grades 3-10. Lessons scaffold learning and apply to real-world activities and design-based learning. |
WEb-Based Instructional Design Process
Instructional Design Process: Oregon Writing Project/SOU Course http://edcoursedesign.weebly.com/ This website includes all components of a complete web-based instructional design process from planning and analysis, through concurrent design, implementation plans, and evaluation (formative & summative) on an online course. The site navigation leads to documents, charts, diagrams, and tools created to complete the design process. This project required communication and collaboration with SMEs and university personnel to gain approval for a new course bridging the mission of the Oregon Writing Project and the School of Education at Southern Oregon University. This course was accepted and I taught it during the 2013-2014 academic year. |

Online Course Design Process: Introduction to School Leadership and Administration The following is a note I received from Alisha Blanchard in response to this university online course design: Hi, Rebecca! If I had the authority, I would hire you to design every course in every program! Your design document is the best I have ever come across. I know I have said it before, but I am very impressed with the work you did. Thank you so much for taking the time to produce a QUALITY course. It’s really great! I’m not writing with a specific purpose; just working on building the course and felt the need to send my praises and express (again) my appreciation. Have a great week! Global Learning-social media
Global Education: Scoop.It Curated Content
http://www.scoop.it/t/global-education-by-rebecca-olien This is an example of a curated topic as a create and interactive way to share resources in a university course I designed on the topic of global education. The content is curated with comments and questions to facilitate inquiry, deepen understanding, and guide curiosity and further learning. Students are guided to explore education comparison assessments and data, review education practices in highest performing countries, and explore ways to open our own doors toward a more global approach to education through authentic global exchanges and project-based learning. |
Online Community of Practice & Teacher PD
Online Community of Practice PD: In2Books
http://www.screencast.com/t/04iywrO2 This screencast is an example of an online teacher community of practice designed and implemented for teachers in the In2Books program. The purpose of the recording is to introduce teachers to the summer session, tour features of the platform, as well as provide steps for getting started. This showcases the online community, as well as the use of a screencast tutorial in a fully online program. Program Awards While Serving as Director of the In2Books Program

Mobile Quest M-Learning
Mobile City Quest: Washington, D.C.
XHTML and MobilehhCSS, mobilescr.css, mobileprt.css stylesheets were used to create a city guide for learners on the go. This mobile device activity is structured and formatted to fit on the smaller screen size using only relevant information, while maintaining a conversational tone in alignment with the personalization principle. This mobile quest was shared with others visiting D.C. and applied in a real-time setting for an authentic purpose. |
